Growing Up Victorian: A Kentucky Childhood

Growing up in the upper South during the second half of the 19th century is the subject of this exhibit. Featured are room settings, object displays, photographs, and other images that illustrate the people, places, events, and ideas of a Victorian childhood. It links the places and things of a Kentucky childhood with the written words of Kentucky Victorians. Together they show how middle class values molded young lives. Parlors, a nursery, a school room, toys, clothing, and furnishings depict Victorian life. Visitor games, an audio tape of 19th century parlor music, and a multi-media presentation about four Kentucky Victorian women enhance the visual dimension of the exhibit.
