Theatre Department performed "Cinderella: The World's
Favorite Fairy Tale" for school audiences at the
Kentucky Library & Museum. The play is the story
of Cinderella as she is known in China, Russian and
by Native Americans told by Cinderella herself. |

students had fun Saturday, October 17th, at the Kentucky
Library & Museum learning the techniques of fabric
dying. Dr. Laura McGee did a demonstration for the students.
Some students were so enthused they completed two tie
dyed scarves! |

Break Art Camp |

Twenty
two local children spent their fall break at the Kentucky
Library & Museum Arts Day Camp. While they were
aptly improving their artistic skills, the campers also
recycled waste paper into new hand made paper and learned
about fabric transfer by designing and creating their
own t-shirts. After-campers spent time learning about
Kentucky history by spending time in the A
Star In Each Flag: Conflict in Kentucky
exhibit. |

Over
twenty people from age three to retirees participated
in the Kentucky Library & Museum Gourd Painting
workshop. Participants painted pumpkins, witches as
well as other autumn themes. |

American Days |

Five hundred elementary students participated in the
Kentucky Library & Museum's Native American days
over two days. Children rotated through four stations
learning about Native American life and culture from
experienced Native American reenactors. Topics included
everyday life, culture, weaponry & hunting, and
face painting. |

at the Museum |

The Kentucky Library & Museum hosted "Night
at the Museum" for WKU freshmen. The focus of the
evening was the Civil War exhibit, "A Star in Each
Flag." Students participated in a scavenger hunt,
dressed in period attire, met Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln and
a Union soldier and did much more.

basic drawing, painting, and design skills. By the time
this camp ended, they had experimented with using pen
& ink, charcoal, watercolor, pastels, and acrylic

examined these treasures and gave owners some background

the Historic Railpark in Bowling Green. |

American Days |

The
KYLM Education Department hosted Historic Kentucky Native
American days April 16-17th. Four hands-on stations
including storytelling, everyday life, weaponry, and
beads/face painting were staffed by experienced Native
American re-enactors, as well
as KYLM staff and volunteers. Four hundred thirty five
area school children along with 43 teachers and chaperons
attended over the two days. Due to the enthusiastic
response by the schools, the KYLM Education Department
plans to make this an annual event. |

Dye Workshop with Laura McGee |

On
Saturday, April 4, Laura McGee taught a two hour tie-dye
workshop at the Kentucky Library & Museum in which
participants produced richly dyed velvet scarves. Patterns
were created by tying the material with rubber bands
and simple hand bunching as they used brushes and droppers
to deposit the dye in the desired pattern. All were
pleased with their scarves. |

Spring Break Day Campers enjoyed a variety of art activities,
including painting with acrylic and watercolors, block
printing, foam core sculpture, collage and more. They
also toured Kentucky Museum
art exhibits including Side by Side 2009 and the US
Bank juried Exhibition, the largest art exhibit in the
region, and newly installed sculpture on the campus
of Western Kentucky University. |

Exhibition |

than 500 art lovers turned out to celebrate the opening
of the 2009 US Bank “Celebration of the Arts”
Open Art Exhibition. This year’s show is comprised
of nearly 400 works submitted by 200
plus artists competing in the
professional or amateur divisions. Juror Mitch Eckert
of the University of Louisville awarded prizes in in
seven different categories including ceramics, sculpture,
fiber arts, works on paper, photography, watercolor
and painting and named a painting, “The Butcher”
by C. David Jones of Bowling Green, as Best in Show. |

Style Basket Making Workshop |

basket making enthusiasts spent Saturday, Feb. 7th making
an egg basket at the Kentucky Library & Museum.
Using traditional oak hoops, they learned how to weave
a Kentucky style "eye" to lash the hoops together
under the watchful eye of instructor Beth Hester and
her side-kick Scott Gilbert. |

artists, their collaborating professional partners,
and friends and family turned out on Sunday, January
18th for the opening of the Bowling Green VSA arts
of Kentucky: Side by Side exhibit. Featuring
more than 60 works, the exhibit
runs through March 31. |
