Kentucky Museum Wins Best Museum Category

The Kentucky Museum, housed in the Kentucky Building on the campus of WKU, has been named “Best Museum in Bowling Green” in a Bowling Green Daily News readers’ survey. The Best of Bowling Green contest is sponsored by the Bowling Green Daily News.

The Kentucky Building was established in 1939. The Kentucky Museum has more than 40,000 square feet of gallery space which houses a variety of permanent and changing exhibits, including an 1815 Log House, restored and furnished as a pioneer home, the Recommended by Duncan Hines exhibit which follows Hines through his life as a boy in Bowling Green to an American icon, changing exhibits from local art shows to Smithsonian traveling exhibits and opening next fall, A State of Conflict: The Civil War in South Central Kentucky.

The Kentucky Museum serves more than 7,000 school children and 70,000 visitors each year, with a mission “to enhance an understanding of Kentucky and its people.” It collects and preserves Kentucky artifacts, manuscripts, quilts, newspapers, Civil War memorabilia, folk life and genealogical records. The Kentucky Building is also home to the Kentucky Library, The Civil War and Southern History Research Center, and University Archives along with a wide selection of resource materials to help preserve Kentucky’s history.

The Kentucky Museum offers spring, fall and summer day camps for first through sixth graders and an array of workshops for children and adults. Workshops are taught by special guest artists and Artist-in-Residence, Lynne Ferguson, and range from basket making and ornament making to silk painting and woodworking.

The Kentucky Library & Museum is open 9am-4pm Monday through Saturday and 1-4pm on Sunday. Admission is $10 per family or $5 each. Sunday admission is half-price. Please call 270-745-2592 for more information.
