Liberia Bound
Manuscripts Collection MSS 58, I, 1, 7, #25
Item/Collection Note: The American Colonization Society championed the sending of freed slaves to Liberia with their former owners paying most of the expenses. In Elizabeth Cox Underwood's February 15, 1850 letter to her husband, she outlines arrangements made for Davy and family to embark for Liberia. She also relates that Sally (Davy's wife) did the following:

"A night or two before starting, she came in for me to register hers & Davy's births & marriage, & the ages of all their children, dead & alive, in the new Family Bible. She also requested as a great favor a list of the ages etc of yourself & family, on a slip of paper. She had a cry & seemed to be really affected when she left, & I could not help feeling sorry myself."
