Note: Joseph Rogers Underwood writes from Washington, D.C.,
on May 4, 1852, to his wife Elizabeth, concerning payment
of a Supreme Court fee for business that Henry Clay caused
to come his way. Underwood's comments about Clay are:
"Poor man, all his greatness among men, all his fame
is of little worth in the scene he is now passing thru. He
is in the valley of the shadow of death..."
On July 1, 1852, Underwood informs his wife that he is in
Baltimore "on his way to Kentucky with the remains of
Mr. Clay.". |
