Item/Collection Note: On March 15, 1851, Senator Joseph Rogers Underwood is on his way home to Bowling Green from a Congressional session. From Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he writes to his wife:

"I am now at this place on my way home If you have forgotten where it is let me tell you that it is at the head of canal navigation... We reached at about day this morning in cars & I will leave about eleven oclock in the canal boat for Pittsburg where we shall arrive tomorrow..." In a March 22, 1851 letter, Underwood is in Louisville, Kentucky, still en route to Bowling Green! He pens: "I am here safe & well but no chance to get home till next week. The stage is full & I can get no seats."
