Manuscripts Collection MSS 58, II, 1, 2, #1
Item/Collection Note: Warner Lewis Underwood, brother of Joseph Rogers Underwood, on his trip to Texas from Kentucky in September 1834, describes an event that occurred shortly after leaving Franklin, Tennessee. Losing his way, he writes,

"I came to the house of an Indian. It was comfortably fenc'd & somewhat decorated with ornamental trees. A young girl about 16 & some 4 or 5 children were the only persons at home. I endeavoured to explain... that I was lost & to ask of her directions. She seemed utterly unaquainted with my language and unable to comprehend my signs...giving me some vacant looks she took to her heels the children all followed & the whole concern hid near by in the bushes."
