My Old Kentucky Home
Kentucky Library Broadside Collection # S192 (Federal Hill My Old Kentucky Home Bardstown, Kentucky)
In the early 1920s a movement began to purchase Federal Hill, the Rowan homestead in Bardstown, and establish it as a state shrine. Communities were given individual quotas for donations; Bowling Green’s quota was $2000 as listed on this locally produced broadside. The fundraising was chiefly conducted by Women’s Clubs throughout the state of Kentucky. Generosity was encouraged; "The old song has tugged at our heart strings…Let it tug now at our purse strings" notes the broadside. It is long been believed that Stephen Collins Foster wrote the song, and now state song, "My Old Kentucky Home", about the Rowan Estate.
Gift of Elizabeth Coombs, 1942
