Spelling Bee Certificate
Kentucky Library Broadside Collection #S1271
Florence Marshall received this certificate for being the fourth grade spelling champion at Greenwood School in Warren County. These competitions, sponsored by the Courier-Journal, were held at schools throughout the state and many times were community events. School champions competed on the county level, and winners were given a free trip to the Kentucky Education Association meeting at which the state competition was held. This certificate, which dates from 1930, was signed by Florence’s teacher and Robert W. Bingham, the publisher of the Courier-Journal.
