Strawberry Exhibition
Kentucky Library Broadside Collection #S1269
Strawberries were once an important cash crop for Kentucky farmers. Extensive cultivation began in the late 1860s. Farmers recognized that they could harvest a strawberry patch several times in May prior to planting their tobacco. This 1886 strawberry exhibition was sponsored by the South of the Green River chapter of the Kentucky Horticultural Society, whose membership was chiefly made up of Bowling Green citizens. Perhaps they were holding regional exhibitions to locate outstanding cultivars. Notice that the prizes were almost exclusively given by Bowling Green merchants.
