Elbert
Hubbard (1856-1915), whose "Credo" is produced here,
was a great proponent of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Heavily
influenced by the aesthetic ideas of William Morris, Hubbard
established the Royfcroft Shop in Aurora, New York in 1895.
The colony included printers and other artisans who used old
processes and natural materials to produce aesthetically pleasing
products. In his "Credo" Hubbard espoused the idea
of holistic health practiced by the colony. In the bottom
right corner is the Roycroft insignia. Hubbard died on May
7, 1915 in the sinking of the Lusitania. |
