Rural Training School
History
The Rural Training School or "Model Rural School" opened
in February 1924 in its newly constructed building at the corner
of 16th Street (now Virginia Garrett Avenue) and Normal Drive.
Its purpose was to provide specialized teacher training in a one-room
school environment. The school taught grades one through six and
enrolled forty children. It also conducted summer school. Ethel
Baker Clark was the Rural Training School teacher from 1924 until
shortly before her death in 1947. Mrs. Mae Wilson Pedigo succeeded
her and remained until the school closed in the summer of 1955.
