Thomas Meredith
Biography
Thomas Meredith was born on December 7, 1941 in Owensboro, Daviess
County, Kentucky. He obtained a bachelor's degree at Kentucky
Wesleyan College, a master's degree from Western Kentucky University
and a doctorate in education from the University of Mississippi.
At the time of his election as Western's eighth president Meredith
was vice chancellor for executive affairs at the University of
Mississippi.
Meredith took office as president on August 31, 1988. Among his
accomplishments were the introduction of Western's first strategic
plan, the Distinguished Professorship Program and several new
master's degree programs. The campus became fully computer-networked,
two new residence halls and a health and activities center were
opened, and Western's Hall of Distinguished Alumni and Athletic
Hall of Fame were established. President Meredith served until
May 11, 1997 when he assumed the duties of Chancellor of the University
of Alabama System.
