The Rural Training School or "Model Rural School" opened
in February 1924 in its newly constructed building at the corner of 16th
Street (now Virginia Garrett Avenue) and Normal Drive. Its purpose was
to provide specialized teacher training in a one-room school environment.
The school taught grades one through six and enrolled forty children.
It also conducted summer school. Ethel Baker Clark was the Rural Training
School teacher from 1924 until shortly before her death in 1947. Mrs.
Mae Wilson Pedigo succeeded her and remained until the school closed in
the summer of 1955. Collection The collection includes a short history written by Mrs. Mae Wilson Pedigo, programs and materials from various Christmas recitals, commencement materials, and a poetry anthology compiled by Ethel Baker Clark. Parent Teacher Association materials include a program relating to the presentation of a portrait of Miss Clark and minute books of the P.T.A. from 1944-1951. Scrapbooks compiled by the P.T.A. covering the years 1941 to 1955 are also available. Search the collection inventory. Volume
