Ogden College Entrance Exam 1889

ARITHMETIC: Time allowed, two and one-half hours.

1. Express as a common fraction 0.001375, and reduce to lowest terms.

2. Simplify: (2 + 1/5) + (3 +1/7)
(1/2 – 1/3)x(4-3 3/7)
3. 2/3 of ¾ is 1/5 of what number?

4. If sugar costs $7.00 per cwt., at what rate per pound must it be retailed to gain 7 ½ per cent?

5. A well is 18 yards 2 inches deep, and the wheel is 4 feet 2 inches round; how many turns of the wheel will raise the bucket?

6. Multiply 256 ½ by three hundredths, and divide the product by .12825.

7. 500 barrels of flour were sold for $4125 at a profit of 10%. Find the cost per barrel.

8. What is the interest on $280.60 at 3 1/2% for 4 years and 2 months?

UNITED STATES HISTORY: (The examination paper in history is to serve also as a test of spelling, penmanship, and practical knowledge of English Grammar.)

1. State when and where the first permanent English settlement was made in America. Had any previous attempts at settlement been made by the English? If so, where? When? Under whose leadership? And with what results?

2. Where and when was the first engagement of the American Revolution fought? The last? The result of that revolution? When was peace declared?

3. Was Washington City ever captured by a hostile force? If so, in what war? In what year? And with what result?

4. State what year, in what wars, on what soil, under what leaders and with what results the following battles were fought: Chancellorsville, Kings Mountain, the Thames and Buena Vista.

5. When, where and by whom was the first settlement made by whites in Kentucky? To what State did Kentucky then belong? When was Kentucky admitted as a State into the Union?

GEOGRAPHY: (Time, two hours)

1. What principal mountain ranges constitute the Appalachian system? In what states are they found?

2. Describe the course of the Roanoke river.

3. Bound the State of Kentucky and give its population in 1880.

4. Locate the following cities, naming also on what streams or bodies of water, if any, they are situated: Melbourne, Havre, Aspinwall, Tokio [sic], Stockholm, Denver, Liverpool, Vera Cruz, Duluth, and Lima.

5. Through what waters must a ship sail in going from New Orleans to Bremen?

6. Name, in order, from north to south, the states that border on the Atlantic Ocean.

7. What is a meridian? What are the tropics of Capricorn and Cancer? What countries in the Western hemisphere lie under the equator?
