The
following services are recommended for use by first-year students and
non-majors:
- Academic
Search Premier
and MasterFILE Premier: These two all-subject WWW-based
services (they are part of the EBSCOhost system) feature indexing
and abstracting of many journals and magazines WKU Libraries receives
in hardcopy, plus a large selection of articles in full-text.
- Facts
on File News Digest: Delivers the complete
full-text of the authoritative Facts On File News Digest since
January 1980, updated every week.
- Google
Scholar: A free Web-based Google service that restricts searches
to the scholarly literature. Now features linking to full-text of articles
held by WKU.
- Newspaper
Source (EBSCOhost): (EBSCOhost)
Provides full text for 128 regional U.S. newspapers, fifteen international
newspapers, six newswires, and nine newspaper columns, The Christian
Science Monitor and The Los Angeles Times, for a total of
160 full text newspapers and other sources.
- LexisNexis
Academic: full-text news, law, business, and finance items,
including newspapers, wire services, and broadcast transcripts
from U.S. and international news sources. Also includes U.S. Federal
and state case law, codes, regulations, legal news, and law reviews.
- NewsBank:
full-text of newspapers, including local, national, and international
titles.
- Times
(London) Digital Archive: Online tool researchers can
search through the complete digital edition of The Times (London),
to retrieve full facsimile images of articles from 1785-1985.
- (Historical)
Los Angeles Times: Another complete
digital rendering with full facsimile images of articles from
1881-1986.
- (Historical)
New York Times: Complete digital
rendering with full facsimile images of articles from 1851-2004.
The following
services are recommended for use by advanced students and researchers:
- ArticleFirst:
FirstSearch database available to faculty and graduate students
(and to undergraduate students by special permission). Indexes almost
13,000 journals and magazines from 1990 onward, including some ninety
percent of the ones University Libraries carries in hardcopy.
- Alt-Press
Watch has full text of over 170 alternative and independent
newspapers, magazines and journals.
- Alt-Press
Index: FirstSearch database available to faculty and graduate
students (and to undergraduate students by special permission). Indexes
journals covering cultural, economic, political & social change.
- ComAbstracts:
Maintained by the Communication Institute for Online Scholarship,
this database contains abstracts of articles published in the
primary professional literature of the communication(s) field.
- HeinOnline:
Contains cover-to-cover full-page images for all issues of over 1,200
legal journals, cases from the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Attorney
General Opinions, and English Reports Full Reprint (1694-1867). Also
contains all issues of the Federal Register, Code of Federal Regulations,
and U.S. Statutes at Large. HeinOnline also contains all issues of
the Congressional Record (1873 to present), the Annals of Congress
(1789-1924), Register of Debates (1824-1837), and Congressional Globe
(1833-1873). Also includes many sources for international law, United
Nations, and treaty research.
- Journalism
& Mass Communications Abstracts: Formerly Journalism Abstracts,
includes abstracts of dissertations and theses accepted for graduate
degrees. Print version also available (see Monographic Works section
below).
- JSTOR:
Provides the full text/full image web access of the complete archival
collections of a large number of journals, up to the most recent three
to five years.
- PerAbs:
Periodical abstracts from general and academic journals (FirstSearch database
accessible to graduate students and faculty, and to undergraduates
by special permission).
- Project
Muse: Provides online, worldwide, institutional subscription
access to the full text of over 100 scholarly journals in the
arts and humanities, social sciences and mathematics.
- Reader's
Guide Retrospective 1890-1982: Contains all information from
the printed
Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature in a
single database. Indexes over 375 leading magazines and journals
(many peer-reviewed). Also includes PDF full text of the Wilson
Library Bulletin from 1914-1983. Subject headings have been updated
with modern terminology, although the original subject headings
are also available.
- WilsonSelectPlus:
Full-text articles in science, humanities, education and business
(FirstSearch database accessible to graduate students and
faculty, and to undergraduates by special permission).
- Vanderbilt
Television News Archive: The world's most extensive and complete
archive of television news. The collection holds more than 30,000 individual
network evening news broadcasts from the major U.S. national broadcast
networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN, and more than 9,000 hours of special
news-related programming including ABC's Nightline since 1989.

Electronic Journal Finder [use to access Libraries' electronic
journals, magazines, and newspapers, as well as some indexes and databases
containing full-text articles; includes a comprehensive A-Z listing of
titles]
Special resource: KenCat
[A searchable catalog of the collections at the Kentucky Library &
Museum. KenCat includes manuscripts, letters, sheet music, photographs,
museum exhibits, images, journals, and books.]

- Newpaper Indexes
(eg., Wall Street Journal, LA Times, Chicago Tribune
and others) can be found in the Reference Periodical Index section (AI121).
- Journalism &Mass
Communication Abstracts (PN4725 .J67x Ref. Per. Indexes) An annual
listing of master's theses and doctoral dissertations in journalism
and mass communication.
- Index to Journals
in Communication Studies Through 1990. (2 v.) Volume 1 lists the
tables of contents for 19 journals used in communications studies from
the first volume issued through the final issue for 1990. Volume 2 carries
a series of indexes: contributors, subjects, and keywords.
- A Dictionary
of Communication and Media Studies (P87.5 W38 1997): This 4th
edition included new terms like "guard dog metaphor," "cyberspace,"
and "cultural memory."
- International
Encyclopedia of Communications (P87.5 .I5 1989): This four-volume
set is somewhat dated, but contains useful information.
- International
Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (H40. A2 I5 Main Ref): An older
set of almost 20 volumes that can fill in the historical gaps (from
1968).
- Webster’s
New World Dictionary of Media and Communications (P87.5 W45 1996):
Award-winning coverage of public relations, journalism, advertising,
film, and television.
- Who’s
Who in the Media and Communications (P88.8 W567) Brief biographical
entries on people in telecommunications, journalism, publishing, advertising,
marketing, computers, and broadcasting.
- Women in Communication:
A Biographical Sourcebook (P94.5 W65 W667 1996 Main Ref): A compilation
of essays about the lives and accomplishments of women in communications.
- Other handbooks,
dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, etc.: available in Helm Reference,
mainly in the P87-94, PN4726-PN4888 range of the collection.
