1. To Shelf-Browse for Books (using main Library of Congress Subject Divisions)

Books on subjects associated with this field are shelved under the call number ranges listed below. Use TOPCAT to search for specific items in the collection, or more narrowly-defined subjects.

2. To Find Journal and Magazine Articles (using indexing/abstracting/full-text services)

The following services are recommended for courses for first-year students and non-majors:

  • ABI/INFORM Global (ProQuest)- Index with abstracts of over 550,000 articles in nearly 1500 global business periodicals; 700 full text titles with coverage back to 1991/92 and indexing back to 1971.
  • Business Source Premier (EBSCOhost) KYVL- Index with full text for more than 2300 global business journals, including full text for more than 1100 peer-reviewed titles.
  • Google Scholar: A free Web-based Google service that restricts searches to the scholarly literature. Now features linking to full-text of articles held by WKU.
  • Wall Street Journal (Full-text in ABI/INFORM)- Wall Street journal articles, Eastern edition, 1984-Current. Subject/date/other indexing.

The following services are recommended for use by advanced students and researchers:

  • MathSciNet: This Database contains Mathematical Reviews, with indexing from 1940 to 1979 and full reviews from 1980 to the present, (updated monthly, as well as Current Mathematical Publications, updated daily).
  • ACM Digital Library: A large collection of citations and full text from ACM journal and newsletter articles and conference proceedings.
  • Science (Magazine) Online (AAAS).
  • IEEE Computer Society Magazine Package: Access to articles from 14 IEEE journals back to 1988.
  • SpringerLink: Access to about 1000 Springer journals with full content back to about 1997.
  • ejournal collections by individual publisher: Cambridge Journals Online, ScienceDirect (Elsevier), and Wiley Interscience. Abstracting of the nearly 2000 science journals published by these companies, with some full-text available at each site (individually).
  • DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals): "This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals" (across all subject areas, and in multiple languages).
  • Electronic Journal Service: EJS (EBSCOhost): Full-text articles, tables of content, and abstracts from journals across all subject areas.
  • ArticleFirst: FirstSearch database available to faculty and graduate students (and to undergraduate students by special permission). Indexes almost 13,000 journals and magazines from 1990 onward, including some ninety percent of the ones University Libraries carries in hardcopy.
  • Ingenta: A free online database indexing some 28000 journals and magazines from the 1980s onward. Offers for-pay text delivery.
  • JSTOR: Provides the full text/full image web access of the complete archival collections of over 225 (and growing) core scholarly journals up to the most recent three to five years.
  • Applied Science and Technology Index: A Web-based database that indexes a number of computer science-related titles. A paper version running through 1997 is located in Reference at TA1 .A66 (ref.per.ind.).
  • Computer Literature Index: Paper index for persons involved in the "practicing end of the computer profession." Coverage ended in 2001. Located in Reference at QA76.5 .Q31ax (ref.per.ind.).
  • Computing Reviews: A paper product that reviews the emerging literature of computer science. Located in Reference at QA1.C6x (ref.per.ind.).
  • ACM Guide to Computer Literature: A paper index for the field of computer science. Ended in 1997. Located in Reference at QA76.C5854 (ref.per.ind.).
  • Microcomputer Index/Abstracts: paper index/abstract covering 1982-1997. Located in Reference at QA75.5 .M5 (ref.per.ind.).

Special resource:  Business Reference Information in the WKU Libraries [Basic catalogs, databses, and print resources for business disciplines available in the WKU Libraries.]
Special resource:
 TDNet Electronic Journal Finder [use to access Libraries' electronic journals, magazines, and newspapers, as well as some indexes and databases containing full-text articles; includes a comprehensive A-Z listing of titles]

  • Dictionary of Information Science and Technology. Latest terms and definitions related to all aspects of information science and technology field.-Helm Library Reference Room Business Alcove Ref T58.5.D499
  • Encyclopedia of Information Systems- reference for information systems design implementation, and utilization-Helm Library Reference Room Business Alcove Ref QA76.15.E516.
  • Other computer information systems sources are available in Reference, mainly in the HF5548.125- HF5548.6 and QA75- QA76.95 part of the collection.
