2. To Find Journal and Magazine Articles (using indexing/abstracting/full-text services)

The following services are recommended for use by first-year students and nonmajors:

  • Academic Search Premier and MasterFile Premier: These two EBSCOhost databases search nearly 7000 journals (some of which are available in full-text) and cover a broad general array of topics.
  • NewsBank: full-text of newspapers, including local, national, and international titles.
  • Alt-Press Watch: a 100% full text database of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the alternative and independent press.
  • LexisNexis Academic: full-text news, law, business, and medical items. Includes: 1) News, newspapers, wire services, and broadcast transcripts; 2) Legal Information, U.S. Federal and state case law, codes, regulations, legal news, and law reviews; 3) Medical Information, full-text medical journals, and medical newsletters
  • MLA (Modern Language Association): A FirstSearch database which exhaustively indexes (only) all literature of the field of Literature, Languages, Linguistics, and Folklore.

The following services are recommended for use by advanced students and researchers:

  • AIDSearch: Updated monthly, AIDSearch is a combination of three database files providing information about HIV and related topics from 1980 to present.
  • ArticleFirst (indexing only): This all-subject FirstSearch-based database indexes almost 13,000 journals and magazines from 1992 onward, including some ninety percent of the ones University Libraries carries in hardcopy.
  • Communication and Mass Media Complete: A full-text database in EBSCOhost which not only looks at communication itself (in the form of various media: newpaper, television, magazine, etc.), but the process of communication.
  • Medline: Found in EBSCOhost, this is the foremost medical database maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  • Project Muse: Provides online, worldwide, institutional subscription access to the full text of over 100 scholarly journals in the arts and humanities, social sciences and mathematics.
  • PubMed: A free government version of Medline.

Special resource:  TDNet Electronic Journal Finder [use to access Libraries' electronic journals, magazines, and newspapers, as well as some indexes and databases containing full-text articles; includes a comprehenisve A-Z listing of titles]
