1. To Shelf-Browse for Books (using main Library of Congress Subject Divisions)

Books on subjects associated with this field are shelved under the call number ranges listed below. Use TOPCAT to search for specific items in the collection, or more narrowly-defined subjects.

Coal Economics: HD9540-HD9559 ------- Forensic Chemistry: HV8073, RA1053, & RA1057-RA1057.55 ------- Atomic Physics: QC170-QC173.458 ------- Spectroscopy: QC450-QC467 ------- Chemistry (all main subjects): QD ------- Geochemistry: QE514-QE516.5 ------- Animal Biochemistry: QP501-QP801 ------- Environmental & Industrial Pollution: TD ------- Chemicals & Chemical Engineering/Technology: TP ------- Chemistry Bibliography: Z5521-Z5526 ------- Environment & Pollution Bibliography: Z5861-Z5862 ------- Coal & Coal Mining Bibliography: Z6033.C7 & Z6738.C6

2. To Find Journal and Magazine Articles (using indexing/abstracting/full-text services)

The following services are recommended for courses for first-year students and nonmajors:

  • Academic Search Premier and MasterFILE Premier: These two all-subject WWW-based services (they are part of the EBSCOhost system) feature indexing and abstracting of many journals and magazines WKU Libraries receives in hardcopy, plus a large selection of articles in full-text.
  • ArticleFirst: This all-subject FirstSearch-based database indexes almost 13000 journals and magazines from 1992 onward, including some ninety percent of the ones University Libraries carries in hardcopy.
  • Science (Magazine) Online (AAAS).
  • Google Scholar: A free Web-based Google service that restricts searches to the scholarly literature. Now features linking to full-text of articles held by WKU.

The following services are recommended for use by advanced students and researchers:

  • SciFinder Scholar: Produces enhanced access to Chem Abstracts, MEDLINE, and three patent databases online; is Web-based, but depends on the installation of WKU station-specific client operating software.
  • Applied Science and Technology Index: A Web-based database that indexes a fair number of chemical technology/engineering-related titles. A paper version running through 1997 is located in Reference at TA1 .A66 (ref.per.ind.).
  • Science (Magazine) Online (AAAS).
  • Nature (Magazine) Online.
  • SpringerLink: Access to around 1000 Springer journals with full text content back to about 1997.
  • BIOSCIENCEnetBASE: A collection of around 250 e-books in the biological sciences and related subjects.
  • ejournal collections by individual publisher: Cambridge Journals Online, ScienceDirect (Elsevier), and Wiley Interscience. Abstracting of the nearly 2000 science journals published by these companies, with some full-text available at each site (individually).
  • ACS Publications: The American Chemical Society "is the leading publisher of peer-reviewed research journals in the chemical and related sciences, serving scientific communities worldwide through an unparalleled commitment to quality, reliability, and innovation."
  • BIOSIS Previews: This abstracting service combines Biological Abstracts and Biological Abstracts/RRM (Reports, Reviews, and Meetings) to provide global coverage of the life sciences and biomedical sciences literature, including biochemistry.
  • DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals): "This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals" (across all subject areas, and in multiple languages).
  • Electronic Journal Service: EJS (Ebsco): Full-text articles, tables of content, and abstracts from journals across all subject areas.
  • ECO (FirstSearch KYVL database): No full-text, but provides indexing of WKU hardcopy journal subscriptions across all subject areas.
  • Google Scholar: As described above.
  • International Critical Tables.
  • ArticleFirst: As described above.
  • Ingenta: A free online database indexing some 28000 journals and magazines from the 1980s onward. Offers for-pay text delivery.
  • CA Selects: Coal Science & Process Chemistry: A paper abstracting service focusing on coal science. Located in Reference at QD1.C4x (ref.per.ind.).

Special resource: Comprehensive List of Indexes, Abstracts, and Full-Text Services Related to the Natural & Applied Sciences Held by University Libraries
Special resource:  TDNet Electronic Journal Finder [use to access Libraries' electronic journals, magazines, and newspapers, as well as some indexes and databases containing full-text articles; includes a comprehensive A-Z listing of journal/magazine titles]
Special resource:  Knovel Online Library: A set of technical reference books and tables of particular interest to engineering, mathematics, physics, astronomy, and chemistry.

3. Monographic and Other Reference Materials in the Helm Library

The following are recommended for use:

  • handbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, etc.: available in Reference, mainly in the QD, TD, and TP parts of the collection. Note especially the following:  The ACS Style Guide QD8.5 .A25 2006 ------- Handbook of Chemistry and Physics QD65.H3 ------- Encyclopedia of Analytical Science (an encyclopedia of analytical chemistry methods) QD71.5 .E53 ------- Encyclopedia of Spectroscopy and Spectrometry QD95 .E55x ------- Inorganic Syntheses QD151 .A1.I5 ------- Dictionary of Organic Compounds QD246.D5 ------- Organic Syntheses QD262.O7 ------- Encyclopedia of Environmental Pollution and Cleanup TD173.E53 ------- Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology TP9.E685 ------- Concise Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology TP9.K54.
