Apart from their routine operations, the University Library sponsors and organizes a variety of activities and workshops every semester. Follow the links on the left to keep yourself up-to-date with what is going on in the Libraries.

Kentucky Style Basket Making Workshop

Fifteen basket making enthusiasts spent Saturday, Feb. 7th making an egg basket at the Kentucky Library & Museum. Using traditional oak hoops, they learned how to weave a Kentucky style "eye" to lash the hoops together under the watchful eye of instructor Beth Hester and her side-kick Scott Gilbert.

Bowling Green VSA arts of Kentucky: Side by Side Exhibit Opening

Young artists, their collaborating professional partners, and friends and family turned out on Sunday, January 18th for the opening of the Bowling Green VSA arts of Kentucky: Side by Side exhibit. Featuring more than 60 works, the exhibit runs through March 31.

Christmas in Kentucky

On December 6, 2008, the Kentucky Library & Museum held its annual "Christmas in Kentucky" celebration. The theme for this year was the Civil War in Kentucky and nearly 1,000 visitors turned out for family-oriented activities that included ornament making, caroling, and dramatic performances. The Mischief Makers Performance

In November, several hundred area school children learned about the world’s three greatest tricksters and about theatre and theatrical vocabulary, as well as African, Native American, and European cultures. Performed by WKU Theater Department students.

WKU Homecoming Parade

Kentucky Library and Museum volunteers and employees marched in the October 31st WKU Homecoming Parade distributed fliers and candy to promote "Christmas in Kentucky Saturday", December 6th at the KYLM.

Civil War Exhibit Opening

On October 25, 2008, the Kentucky Library & Museum celebrated the opening of the new Civil War exhibit, titled "A Star In Each Flag: Conflict In Kentucky".

Lincoln/Civil War Teacher Workshop

Area educators participated in a Lincoln/Civil War Teacher Workshop on Saturday, October 18th. They learned about primary resources, toured the new Civil War exhibit, created Civil War crafts to use in the classroom, and watched a performance by a Lincoln interpreter. Afternoon activities included a Lincoln/Douglas debate, a presentation on storytelling, and learning how to dance Civil War style.

Fall Break Arts Camp

Several fantastic area children participated in Fall Break Arts Camp the week of October 13-17. Led by Kentucky Library & Museum Artist-in-Residence Lynne Ferguson, participants marbled paper, wove their own baskets, painted gourds and became printmakers.

Appraisal Day

Is it trash or treasure? More than 150 people turned out on Saturday, August 16 to have their antiques appraised and learn something about their collectibles at the same time.

Davie Reneau and fifteen campers learned techniques of hand building with clay pinch pots, coil and slab work.

Fine Art Camp 2008

Fine art was the theme of the summer camp held the week of June 9th. Led by Kentucky Library & Museum Artist-in-Residence Lynne Ferguson, campers built on their basic drawing, painting, and design skills and used several mediums including watercolor, acrylic paint, collage, and sculpture.

Hands-On History Camp 2008

Led by Eileen Starr, participants in the “Hands-on History” camp explored the history of Kentucky through music, food, dance, and much more.

April 25, 2008 - The WKU Kentucky Library & Museum’s VSA arts program SIDE BY SIDE has received an Award for Outstanding Community Partner for its work with VSA arts of Kentucky.

Spring Break Arts Camp 2008

Over Spring Break, Warren County grade school students took the opportunity to learn about three-dimensional art. Campers learned techniques for sculpting with clay, wire, foam, plastic, and paper. The children found inspiration in the new sculptures on the WKU campus and famous sculptors like Henry Moore, Dale Chihuly, and Elizabeth Berrien. Campers were encouraged to keep their artwork and display
                          it at home.

US Bank "Celebration of the Arts" Open Art Exhibition 2008 Opening

Five hundred art lovers turned out on Saturday, March 1 for the opening of the 2008 US Bank “Celebration of the Arts” Open Art Exhibition. The show featured nearly 400 works submitted by two hundred area artists. Juror Joseph H. Molinaro, Ceramics chair at Eastern Kentucky University, awarded prizes in seven categories - painting, watercolor works on paper, ceramics, photography, fiber arts and sculpture - to entrants in the professional and amateur divisions.

Spring Flower Quilting Workshop
At a quilting workshop on Saturday, February 16, participants made a small wallhanging and in the process learned two techniques used by quilt makers-- how to paper piece and how to make three dimensional flowers. Both techniques also can be used to accent clothing, home accessories and other sewing projects.
Visit From St. Joseph's School
On the afternoon of February 8, seventeen third graders from St. Joseph’s School in Bowling Green visited the Kentucky Library & Museum to search though our approximately 12,000 photographs. Their mission included looking for pictures of "jobs, transportation, schools and churches" that they could use in preparing a “scrapbook” of pictures depicting the history of Bowling Green.
VSA arts Side By Side 2008

The Side by Side 2008 exhibit opening on Sunday, January 27 drew a large crowd to the Kentucky Library & Museum. This exhibit is a collaboration between VSA arts and the Kentucky Library & Museum. In attendance were the student artists, their families, and the professional artists who volunteered their time.

Clay Workshop with Davie Reneau

In January national award winning ceramicist Davie Reneau led two hand-building clay workshops for adults at the Kentucky Library & Museum. The participants spent two Saturday mornings learning hand-building techniques including pinch pots, coil, and slab work.
