Break Arts Camp 2008 |
|
Over
Spring Break, Warren County grade school students took the opportunity
to learn about three-dimensional art. Campers learned techniques
for sculpting with clay, wire, foam, plastic, and paper. The children
found inspiration in the new sculptures on the WKU campus and famous
sculptors like Henry Moore, Dale Chihuly, and Elizabeth Berrien.
Campers were encouraged to keep their artwork and display it at
home.

Bank "Celebration of the Arts" Open Art Exhibition 2008
Opening |
| Five
hundred art lovers turned out on Saturday, March 1 for the opening
of the 2008 US Bank “Celebration of the Arts” Open Art
Exhibition. The show featured nearly 400 works submitted by two
hundred area artists. Juror Joseph H. Molinaro, Ceramics chair at
Eastern Kentucky University, awarded prizes in seven categories
- painting, watercolor works on paper, ceramics, photography, fiber
arts and sculpture - to entrants in the professional and amateur
divisions.

Flower Quilting Workshop |
At
a quilting workshop on Saturday, February 16, participants made a
small wallhanging and in the process learned two techniques used by
quilt makers-- how to paper piece and how to make three dimensional
flowers. Both techniques also can be used to accent clothing, home
accessories and other sewing projects. |
| Visit
From St. Joseph's School |
On
the afternoon of February 8, seventeen third graders from St. Joseph’s
School in Bowling Green visited the Kentucky Library & Museum
to search though our approximately 12,000 photographs. Their mission
included looking for pictures of "jobs, transportation, schools
and churches" that they could use in preparing a “scrapbook”
of pictures depicting the history of Bowling Green. |

arts Side By Side 2008 |
| The
Side by Side 2008 exhibit opening on Sunday, January 27 drew a large
crowd to the Kentucky Library & Museum. This exhibit is a collaboration
between VSA arts and the Kentucky Library & Museum. In attendance
were the student artists, their families, and the professional artists
who volunteered their time.

In
January national award winning ceramicist Davie Reneau led two hand-building
clay workshops for adults at the Kentucky Library & Museum.
The participants spent two Saturday mornings learning hand-building
techniques including pinch pots, coil, and slab work.

Ornaments: Kentucky Style |
| An
exhibit of several hundred Kentucky-themed Christmas ornaments created
by 4th and 5th graders from Warren County.

| KYLM
and WKU Theater Department Present International Holiday |
| The
Kentucky Library & Museum in partnership with the WKU Theatre
Department offered school day performances of International
Holiday to area school children. Written by Bowling Green native
Mary Hall Surface, the 40 minutes production explores Hanukkah,
Kwanzaa, Christmas in Mexico, and New Year's in Japan traditions.
During three performances 770 children and adults attended.

in Kentucky 2007 |
On
Saturday, December 1, nearly 1,000 visitors celebrated the holidays
at the Kentucky Library & Museum. Big Red and Santa were in
attendance; activities included open hearth cooking, a fiddler,
a scavenger hunt, ornament making, 1950s games, a magician, and
two plays.

at the Museum: Christmas Traditions |
| Professor
Nancy Baird gave an insightful presentation of the history of Christmas
traditions. Where did the Christmas tree come from? Santa’s
red suit? How about the real story behind The Night before Christmas?
Participants also had the opportunity to make their own Christmas
ornaments.

Parade 2007 |
| The
KYLM participated in this year's WKU Homecoming parade by carrying
a banner promoting Christmas in Kentucky Saturday, December 1st
and distributing fliers to parade goers.

Calvert Hall: Kentucky Author and Suffragist" Book Signing |
On
Thursday, November 8, Lynn E. Niedermeier signed copies of Eliza
Calvert Hall: Kentucky Author and Suffragist and shared anecdotes
from the life story of the writer of Aunt Jane of Kentucky and numerous
articles and poems.

Art Badge Workshop for Area Girl Scouts |
| The
KYLM Education Department hosted a Folk Art Badge workshop for area
Girl Scouts on Saturday, October 20th. Scouts toured several of
the museum's exhibits, including Slow Time: The Art of Charley,
Noah and Hazel Kinney.
Artist-in-residence Lynne Ferguson then introduced participants
to the characteristics of folk art, and the Scouts created their
own works including gourds painted as jack ‘o lanterns.

Appraisal Day 2007 |
| On
Saturday, August 18 area collectors participated in Antique Appraisal
Day. The theme of this year’s event was “Kitchen Kitsch”
with “Treasures in your Attic” personality Joe Rosson
returning as the featured appraiser.

Hines Exhibit Opening |
| Opening
festivities for the “Recommended by Duncan Hines” exhibit
at the Kentucky Library & Museum launched the 2007 Duncan Hines
Festival. Activities held on Friday and Saturday, August 3rd &
4th included a ribbon cutting ceremony, recipe judging contest,
1950s sock hop, country breakfast, chautauqua-style performance
by Duncan Hines, and costume contest.
