A Message from Carrie Barnett, WKU Libraries' Development Officer

With a new year comes many exciting projects for the University Libraries, including the Southern Kentucky Book Fest and exhibits and programs at the Kentucky Library and Museum. 

Southern Kentucky Book Fest 2005

The Southern Kentucky Book Fest is Kentucky’s largest literary event. Held annually during National Library Week, the festival is a two-day event. The coming book fest will be held April 15—16, 2005. 

Second Annual USBank Art Show Showcases Area Artists’ Talent

Artistic and creative talent abounds in South-Central Kentucky and can be showcased in the second annual USBank Celebration of the Arts 2005 Open Art Exhibition, scheduled for March 6 – April 10, 2005 at the Kentucky Library and Museum. 

Kentucky Writers Conference Celebrates Its First Annual Event

Join us at South Campus on Thursday, April 14, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Friday, April 15, 8:00 to 11:00 a.m., for the second annual Kentucky Writers Conference! 

The Kentucky Literary Awards

When the inaugural Kentucky Literary Awards were given in April 2003, Bobbie Ann Mason, who received the non-fiction award for her biography of Elvis Presley, noted: "It's a great idea for these awards to bring notice to writers in Kentucky, and I join in celebrating Kentucky literature." Mason captured the true intention of the awards... 

Black History Month @ Your Library

The celebration of Black History Month is attributed to Dr. Carter Woodson.... Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week later to become known as Black History Month because it marks the birthdays of two men who significantly influenced the black American population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. 

One Campus-One Community-One Book

What fun it was to read and discuss the same book with over 3,000 others! With the enormous success of the 2004 One Campus-One Community-One Book, we are gearing up for the 2005 One Book project. The Southern Kentucky Book Fest partners hope to encourage reading by bringing the WKU campus and the Bowling Green community together to read Coiled in the Heart by Kentucky native, Scott Elliott. 

Google Scholar

The search engine giant Google has recently launched a new service called Google Scholar, which claims to allow its users to search for “scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research.” 



Summit Award Winners—Nancy Priest and Mike Harper

Each year during Homecoming week, the University, and specifically, Alumni Affairs, host the Summit Awards.... Mrs. Nancy Priest and Mr. Mike Harper have been selected for the 2004 awards.  

Those Behind the GDRCP Project

The WKU Libraries are undertaking a Government Documents Retrospective Conversion Project (GDRCP). Rosemary Meszaros worked closely with Nelda Sims, Rose Davis, and Connie Foster during the initial stages of the project. 

Doug Wiles

Doug’s responsibilities have grown over the years from just providing security. He also covers safety issues like providing training for new staff members, staging fire drills, and developing policies for emergencies. 


Brian Coutts, Head of the Department of Library Public Services, is the coauthor of Reference Sources in History 2nd Edition published by ABC-CLIO Press (Santa Barbara, CA and Oxford), 2004.

Jonathan Jeffrey, Special Collections Librarian, has been selected to serve on the board of the Jesse Stuart Foundation located in Ashland, Kentucky.

Haiwang Yuan, Web Site & Virtual Library Coordinator, has been awarded the WKU Libraries’ first Summer Faculty Scholarship in the amount of $3,000 for his book project entitled Tales of the Han Chinese.

Jack Montgomery, Collection Services Coordinator, would like to announce the release of his new modern folk music CD entitled Everywhere I Look.

Rosemary Meszaros, Government Documents and Law Collection Coordinator, recently gave a presentation called “Kentucky and Other States' Statistics” at “Finding Free GOLD: Government OnLine Documents” Workshop...

Charles Smith, Science Librarian, has received a Faculty Scholarship Grant to organize a new website entitled "Malvina Reynolds: Song Lyrics & Poetry." He was also invited to give a keynote banquet speech at the January 2005 biennial meeting of the International Biogeography Society.

Paula Owens, Office Coordinator in the Department of Library Technical Services, was selected to attend the 2004/2005 Staff Leadership Institute.


DLPS Receives Exemplary Achievement Award for Laptop Pilot Project

In the summer of 2003, Access Services began circulating a collection of laptop computers to WKU patrons. These five IBM ThinkPad laptops were equipped with wireless technology which allowed users access to the Internet across four floors of the Helm-Cravens Library.

DLTS Received Exemplary Achievement Award for Authority Control Project

The Department of Library Technical Services (DLTS) has been awarded another Unit Production Award for Exemplary Achievement for 2004/2005. This monetary award was given to DLTS for exceptional achievement on the Authority Control Project.

Over 6,000 area children participated in our On the Same Page project.

DLTS Underwent a Major Renovation

In September, 2004, the Department of Library Technical Services (DLTS) on the third floor underwent a major renovation.

Library Faculty and Staff Received 2004 Margie Helm Awards

Jack Montgomery, Collection Services Coordinator from the Department of Library Technical Services, and Nancy Marshall, Senior Reference Associate of the Department of Library Public Services, are the recipients of the 2004 Margie Helm Awards.


WKU Libraries Received the Dictionary of National Biography

In October, 2004 University Libraries received its largest and most expensive set of reference works, the Dictionary of National Biography (DNB).  

WKU Libraries' Subscription to the E-Book (HEB) Project

Western Kentucky University Libraries is a charter subscriber to the American Council of Learned Societies' History E-Book (HEB) Project.   

Kentucky Museum Acquires War Memorabilia

In October 2004, WKU alumnus Donald Greulich donated several souvenirs that his father Cyril acquired while serving in Europe during World War II.  

Recent Acquisitions

  • Gift of Douglas Fugate: Autograph books compiled through the years by individuals of varying ages and who were engaged in various endeavors.  
  • Gift of Jill Breit: documentation, including many photographs of James M. Ingram's architectural designs.  
  • Gift of Verda and Jerry Blankenship: Jerry Blankenship's letters to his Bowling Green parents, describing military life statewide as well as his time in Vietnam during 1967 and 1968.  
  • Gift of Sylvia Fishburn: photos of the Iraqi War happenings and individuals stationed there.  
  • Gift of Patty and Sarah Canon: World War II letters that contain information censored for sensitive data that might assist the enemy.  

  • Matthew Bogard has accepted the position of Library Facilities Specialist with the Department of Library Public Services;
  • Nada Durham has accepted the position of Documents and Law Librarian (PT) with the Department of Library Public Services after her retirement from the Department of Library Technical Services;
  • Isariya Locke has accepted the position of the Owensboro Library Assistant III (PT) with the Extended Campus unit of the Department of Library Public Services;
  • Phillip Edwards is working as weekend Periodicals/Micro Assistant (PT) with the Department of Library Public Services;
  • Daniel Pawley is working as the Library Technology Assistant (PT) with the Department of Library Public Services.
