DLPS
Receives Exemplary Achievement Award for Laptop Pilot Project
by

of Access Services |
In
the summer of 2003 Access Services began circulating a collection
of laptop computers to WKU patrons. These five IBM ThinkPad
laptops were equipped with wireless technology which allowed
users access to the Internet across four floors of the Helm-Cravens
Library. Internal battery power enables the computers to be
used away from a wall outlet. Dan Forrest, Coordinator of
Access Services, directed the pilot project. He and his staff
developed policies and procedures for the circulation of these
laptops, including extensive training of staff and student
assistants and the development of a map of the wireless service
network. The computers were catalogued and bar coded for accurate
record keeping. During the first six months of laptop use,
circulation increased by an average of 140% a month. In recognition
of the success of this program, DLPS received an Exemplary
Achievement Award.
DLTS
Receives Exemplary Achievement Award for Authority Control
Project
by
Katy Roe
The
Department of Library Technical Services (DLTS) has been awarded
another Unit Production Award for Exemplary Achievement for
2004/2005.This monetary award was given to DLTS for exceptional
achievement on the Authority Control Project. This project,
started in February 2004, involved cleaning up and inputting
the correct authority entries for series so they can be searched
correctly in our TOPCAT system. To date, with the help of
faculty and staff from both the Bib Access and Serials Units,
over 8700 Authority File records have been entered into our
system. That number changes daily as the project will be on-going
for quite some time to come. Congratulations to DLTS!

DLTS
Underwent a Major Renovation
by
Katy Roe
In
September, 2004, the Department of Library Technical Services
(DLTS) on the third floor underwent a major renovation. First,
one office was torn down. Then, two new offices (one for Jack
Montgomery and the other for Rose Davis) were built. Upon
completion of these offices, the entire third floor was shut
down so that new carpeting could be installed. DLTS personnel
were displaced for these two weeks, working throughout the
library in various offices and labs. In the long run, the
end result was worth it. The entire floor has taken on a whole
new look. You can see the before and after pictures on the
library’s web page. So, for those of you that haven’t
seen the “new” DLTS, be sure to come on by and
check us out!

Following
the success of One Campus-One Community-One Book, the Southern
Kentucky Book Fest partners sponsored a children’s version
called On the Same Page. Beginning October 18th and ending
during Children’s Book Week on November 19th, children
in the Warren County and Bowling Green area were asked to
read a book and discuss it among their friends, classmates,
and family.
The
book chosen for grades K – 3 was The Librarian from
the Black Lagoon. The book chosen for grades 3 –
6 was The Class Trip from the Black Lagoon. Both
of these books are written by popular children’s author,
Mike Thaler. Over 6,000 children participated in our On the
Same Page project. The activities took place in WKU's DUC,
Bowling Green Public Library, Barnes & Noble Bookseller
as well as twelve elemementary schools. The project was truly
a success!
