Contemporary Quilts Coming
to Museum
Modern trends in quiltmaking offer fiber artists and quiltmakers a
wide range of possibilities for self-expression. Should their next
textile employ machine versus handwork or a combination of both? Does
the quiltmaker want to use a traditional as opposed to nontraditional
pattern, technique or embellishment? Is manufactured, hand-dyed or
hand-woven material best for a given project? On August 27, the museum
staff will celebrate these challenges and opportunities with an exhibit
entitles Contemporary Coverage: Not Your Grandmother's Quilt Anymore!
The show will consist of approximately thirty quilts and wall hangings
that celebrate the diversity of contemporary quiltmaking and offer
clues as to what may become the traditional quilt in the 21st century.
Contemporary Coverage is a departure from many Kentucky Museum quilt
exhibits because it is an invitational show that showcases recent
rather than historical textiles. Quilts or wall hanging s selected
for the show were completed within the last four years and they embody
current trends. Part of the challenge for the exhibit curator was
to identify quiltmakers and fiber artists whose work fit the theme
of the exhibit. As with similar projects, the curator called upon
the Kentucky Heritage Quilt Society for assistance, with five of its
members serving as an informal advisory panel, ensuring that the exhibit
features some of the finest examples of contemporary Kentucky quiltmaking.
