Announcement and Report

of Dreamweaver 4.0 for MAC, 8 copies of DreamWeaver 4.0 for
PC, and 3 copies of PhotoShop 6.0+
;
- Haiwang reported that thanks to Charles Smith's grant, DLPS
has purchased a scanner and OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
software. The scanner is located in Helm 201;
- Haiwang will conduct trainings for WST members in the Fall
semester: Dreamweaver 4.0 (as software arrives), Scanning with
OCR software, and PDF file creation with Adobe Acrobat
UL Web Page
Update
- UL Web page
updates are completed and close to completion;
- Rose Davis
demonstrated the Bobby 3 software (www.cast.org/bobby),
which determines if and to what extent Web pages comply with
ADA specifications. WST decided to start making library Web
pages ADA compliant;
- Haiwang
demonstrated the newly created KERA
pages. WST suggest that some pages be revised so that users
can be linked directly to the database newspaper
- WST discussed
other UL Page update issues and suggested that
- There
be one organizational chart for each department rather
than the two that we currently have, with Chart One to
be converted to a faculty list;
- "1
Big Red Way" be added to the address on each Faculty/Staff
biography pages;
TIP update
- WST discussed
whether TIP should have more of a taxonomic structure rather
than its current directory-like structure. Decision is pending
further discussions;
- It was decided
to remove the search engine ASK Jeeves from the menu on the
left of each TIP page and replace it with Google;
- It was suggested
that consultation be made with Elaine Moore and David Runner
to see if the white
database page be eliminated and David Runner and Haiwang
maintain the one on TIP;
- Members
reported complaints from users that TIP is loading very slowly
both on campus and at home. WST's suspicion or preliminary
diagnosis is:
- Ask
Jeeve graphics linked directly to its site
- The
counter
- The
newsfeeds
Haiwang
is charged to debug TIP to determine what causes the problem,
correct it, and report back at the next meeting.
Other issues
- Sandy demonstrated
the Kentucky Building Online Web site currently under
construction. It is part of the University Libraries' virtual
library/museum initiative. An investigation will be conducted
to see if a shorter URL is possible so that users may have
ease of access
- Per
Nancy Baire's suggestion, WST discussed creation of a "flashier" homepage
for the Kentucky Museum:
- WST
would be open to the idea of KY Museum site having a
bit of its own life, somewhere between academic and commercial,
in order to attract tourists to come to the museum;
- WST
suggested that the change would incorporate the current
UL Web site design template.
- Haiwang
will design a Web site for Southern Kentucky Festival of Books
for the WST to review
- Sean and
National library Week 2002 committee members will consult with
Haiwang on the design and creation of next year's NLW Web site
For WST
