Western's PJ program won first overall photojournalism competition of Hearst Foundation; individual
honors: Jeanie Adams, seventh, and Tamara Voninski, ninth. Department - Tied for fifth in Hearst writing competition; individual honors:
Noelle Phillips, 17th, feature writing; Laura Howard, fourth, and Chris Poore, eighth, personality/profile writing.
Ad Club, first-place national AAF award for public service campaign for a
Lifeskills campaign.
In 45th national CPOY competition, individual honors: Patti Longmire, first
place, news; Tamara Voninski, second, feature picture; Larry Powell, third, feature picture;
Jeanie Adams, third and award of excellence (AoE), portrait; Lee A. Ekstrom, second, personal vision;
Joseph Garcia, AoEs, sports feature and fashion illustration; Rick Loomis, AoE, sports
action; Andy Lyons, AoE, sports portfolio; and Matt Stockman, AoE, sports feature.
Advertising students, national finalist; first, district AAF/NSAC competition

campaign competition.

Michelle McIntyre, Steve Hunt Award of Bluegrass PRSA.
Herald, Sweepstakes Award and best non-daily, SPJ Region Five; individual
honors: Cindy Stevenson, first, editorial writing; Tom Hernes, first, sports
writing; Steve Smart, first, feature photography; Jeanie Adams, first, news photography; and Omar Tatum, first, sports
photography.
SPJ chapter, Fiver Award as most productive in region, beating out professional
chapters in Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville; named best in region for 15th time.
Tina Howard, district director, PRSSA East Central District.
In KIPA competition: 15 first places, 14 seconds, 13 thirds and 35 honorable
mentions, totaling 168 points, 90 more than closest competitor.
In KNPA Newspaper Photographer of the Year Competition, WKU students won 12
awards including first in illustration and sequence, second in feature story
and third in spot news, sports feature, pictorial and sequence.
