WKU HEALTH SERVICES-Vaccine Recommendations

Highly Recommended
Menomune®* Vaccination for bacterial meningitis (a serious infection of the lining of the brain).|
Menactra* It is recommended for all students, especially for those students living in the residence halls.

Hepatitis B* Recommended for all people. It may be required for certain health care workers and health sciences students. 3 injections – First injection at any time, second injection 30 days after the first, third injection six months after the first. Signed waiver accepted in lieu of vaccination for certain health care students. Now recommended that most patients receive the combination Hepatitis A/Hepatitis B (Twinrix) if they are just starting the vaccine series.

MMR MMR-Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccination. Two shot series given in early childhood. May require proof of immunity for certain health care students, or in pregnancy. Proof of immunity against each infection will also be accepted. In view of the recent Mumps outbreak in Iowa and surrounding states, we recommend that you review your child’s immunization record and confirm that s/he had received 2 doses of MMR. If you do not have documentation of 2 doses we strongly recommend that you check with your family doctor or local Health Department about getting the second dose prior to arriving at school.

Tetanus/diphtheria* Booster every 10 years in absence of Tetanus-prone wound.
DECAVAC In the event of Tetanus-prone injury, a booster is required if more than five years since last vaccination.
A newer variety including a Pertussis booster is becoming available. This is intended as a one time booster for adults, and may be given instead of the tetanus/diphtheria combination for both routine boosters and for use in injuries.

TB* This is not a vaccine, but rather a test for exposure to tuberculosis. May be required for certain international and health sciences, and education students. Annual TB Test or chest x-ray (for patients with a previous positive test). If patient has not had a TB test in last 12 months, a two-step test may be required. Documentation of treatment for positive results is required.

Influenza* Now recommended for all patients. However, it is strongly recommended for people with chronic diseases, those over age 65 less than 6 months, and for health care workers.

Recommended
Varicella Ordered on as-needed basis.
(Chicken Pox) Two separate injections, 4-8 weeks apart. Only for students without history of chicken pox infection

Hepatitis A* Recommended for travelers to certain areas, and recently recommended for routine vaccination of infants. Two separate injections, the second 6 to 12 months after the first. This may be received as a three shot series combined with Hepatitis B.

TWINRIX* Combines Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccines.
It is now the recommended vaccine for all patients who need either the Hepatitis A or B vaccine and have not yet received the other.

Please consult your health care provider for additional information and specific recommendations for your circumstances.
