Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
Online Counseling

Welcome to SAP Online Counseling, WKU’s online SAP probation counseling session. This session is for those students that have been placed on probation with the Department of Student Financial Assistance. Typically students are placed on probation for financial aid purposes if they do not meet the minimum SAP Policy requirements or if they are admitted to the University on a probationary status.

The complete Satisfactory Academic Policy (SAP) is available for your review at www.wku.edu/finaid/sap.htm.

Students placed on probation with the Department of Student Financial Assistance must complete this counseling session before any assistance for the probationary period will be awarded. Please read the text below and answer the questions accurately at the end of the text. Once complete, hit the Submit button. If you answered the questions correctly, your counseling session will be submitted automatically to the Department of Student Financial Assistance. If the questions are not answered accurately, then you will be required to re-answer the questions correctly before the record will be submitted.

Summary of SAP Policy

Federal and state regulations require that students receiving assistance from financial aid programs must be monitored for Satisfactory Academic Progress. Satisfactory Academic Progress includes qualitative progress (grade-point average) and quantitative progress (hours earned) toward degree completion.

In order to maintain eligibility beyond the semester of probation BOTH of the following requirements must be met:

  • Satisfactory Academic Achievement (GPA): You must earn a minimum of 2.0 (3.0 for graduate students) GPA for the semester.
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress (Hours Earned): You must earn 100% of the credit hours for which you were awarded financial aid for the semester. (Ex: if you receive aid for 6 hours, you must earn 6 hours or if you receive aid for 9 hours, you must earn 9 hours).

Students that withdraw from a course after receiving financial assistance may jeopardize their eligibility for future terms. It is recommended than any student on probation check with the Department of Student Financial Assistance before dropping or auditing any course to determine if the change in enrollment could affect future eligibility. Also remember that audits, incompletes, and grades of “W” or “F” do not count as hours earned. In addition, a student on probation must complete all courses listed as Incompletes (X) or In Progress (IP) for that semester before credit can be included in the number of hours earned for that term.

Students that fail all courses during a term in which financial aid was received may be required to return a portion of the funds. In addition, such students are denied eligibility for the next term unless an appeal is approved by the Department of Student Financial Assistance.
