ENTRANCE COUNSELING

First-time borrowers are required to complete an entrance counseling session prior to the first loan disbursement. Information concerning this requirement will be sent along with your Master Promissory Note. You may also access KHEAA at http://ww2.kheaa.com/entintro.html to conduct your online counseling session.

FEDERAL PERKINS LOAN

The Perkins loan is a federally funded long-term loan, administered by the University. The loan amount for Perkins loans range from $500 up to $3,000. This loan is based on financial need. The interest rate is fixed 5% and the interest is deferred while a student is enrolled at least half-time. Repayment is made the the Bursar's Office and begins 9 months after graduation or less than half-time enrollment. You may email any questions regarding the Perkins Loan to: perkins.loan@wku.edu.

NATIONAL STUDENT LOAN SYSTEM (NSLDS)

Students may access this web site to check on the total amount of loans borrowed. A PIN number is required to access your information. Information on how to secure a PIN number can be found at http://www.nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA/SaFaq.do.  NSLDS home page is http://www.nslds.ed.gov.

PIN (Personal Identification Number)

A PIN, as related to financial aid, is a number assigned to every student who files a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). A PIN is automatically assigned the first time a student files a FAFSA. However, students may request a PIN before they actually file a FAFSA by going to www.pin.ed.gov. Once you have received a PIN you may use it as your electronic signature to sign both the FAFSA and, if you apply for and accept a Federal Stafford Loan, the Master Promissory Note (MPN).

If you apply for a PIN from www.pin.ed.gov it will take 7 to 10 days for your PIN to arrive in the mail. If you list an email address, however, you will receive your PIN via email within 36 hours.

If you are a dependent student, your parent(s) may also apply for their own PIN which they can use to electronically sign your FAFSA.

A PIN is not required to fill out and submit a FAFSA on the web application or to manually sign a Master Promissory Note.

MASTER PROMISSORY NOTE (MPN)

If you are a first-time loan borrower, following your acceptance of a loan on your award notice, you will be mailed a letter from KHEAA concerning your Master Promissory Note (MPN). It is your promise to use the loan for educational purposes and to repay the loan.

The letter from KHEAA will identify the certified amount of your loan for the academic year and will instruct you how to sign your MPN electronically through KHEAA's website at www.kheaa.com. Your PIN is required for electronic signing.

If you prefer to receive a paper Master Promissory Note, you can print your MPN directly from www.kheaa.com. Paper promissory notes will need to be mailed to a lender for processing.
