Math Placement Exam

WKU Math Placement Exam Instructions Please PRINT and READ these instructions BEFORE beginning the exam.

The Basic Algebra Exam is required to register for math. Students must complete this exam by 7:00 a.m. 3 business days before orientation to register for math their first semester. Students who have not completed the placement exam will not be registered for a math course their first semester. No exceptions can be made in determining placement into a math course.

Registering for the Math Placement Exam

1. To begin the exam, you must register as a new student in this class. Click here to register: “Register as a New Student in this class”

2. Complete the form being sure to complete all required fields. Your Login Name and Password can be whatever you choose.

3. Your Student ID must be your WKU Student ID number in this format 800xxxxxx (without hyphens or other symbols).

4. Click “OK” and confirm that the information you see is correct. If the information is not correct, click “NO” and correct the information. If the information is correct select “Yes”

You are ready to begin the exam. You will have 30 minutes to take this exam, and the timer begins with the first problem. NOTE: Once the exam begins, you can not stop the test. Do not click on the exam link if you do not have time to complete the exam as you will be allowed only one attempt. You will need a pencil and paper to work on some of the problems. Since this is a placement exam, it is used to determine the course that you are ready for. Do not get assistance with the exam, as you could be placed into a course outside of your abilities and your success will be compromised. You can not fail the exam since it is used only for placement and not for college credit.

Taking the Exam

1. To begin the exam, click on “Basic Algebra” under the Assignment Name and login using your information from steps 3 and 4 above.

2. The test and the timer begin with the first question. After selecting the answer, click “Next” at the top of the screen and continue with each question.

3. You can see the “Remaining Time” to take your exam listed in the upper right hand corner of your screen. Do not click on “Quit and Save” as this will end your testing session and your test will be graded as is.

4. After you complete all questions, click on the “Grade” button on the top center of the screen DO NOT click on “Quit and Save” until after you have completed the exam and clicked “Grade”.

5. Click on “Click here to return to the class homepage”.

If you plan to take a calculus course as your first math course you must take the Trigonometry and Elementary Functions exams, too. Otherwise, the Trigonometry exam is not required.
