  Foreign Language Placement Exams

Western Kentucky University requires that students pursuing a four-year degree who first enrolled in summer 2004 or after must show proficiency in a foreign language at the second semester (102) level.

If you earned two credits in a language in high school, you MUST enroll in 102 or higher if you are continuing the language you took in high school. If you earned more than two credits or have lots of experience in the language, you must take the placement exam to determine in which to enroll. If you are taking a language other than the one taken in high school, you may begin with course 101.

Students who have studied language for more than two years in high school should consult the Modern Language website at www.wku.edu/modernlanguages for more information on AP and CLEP credit and for instructions for the online placement exam. The placement exam is free to students and can be taken on any computer with internet access. To ensure that your academic advisor will receive the score in time for the Academic Transitions Program, the exam must be taken 7-10 days beforehand.

Students who do not intend to continue study in the same language as was taken in high school may register for the 101 course during Academic Transitions Program without taking the placement exam
