Due to staffing and scheduling, the Intramural-Recreational Sports department is not offering any additional summer Learn to Swim sessions after June 26th. The next series of the Learn to Swim session will be held in Fall 2008. Please continue to check out our website for the most up to date information and dates.

Levels 1 -6 will have a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 per class. Water Babies and Preschool are "Parent-Child" classes with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10.

All instructors are certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors.

IPAP: Infant Pre-School Aquatics Program (Program offered late spring & summer months)

This class is a "Parent" assisted class. A parent, guardian, child care provider(s), grandparent, and older siblings may participate as the "Parent" and will be in the pool with the child.

Description / Purpose
Water Babies Children ages SIX(6) months to 2 years. The purpose of this program is to promote water safety knowledge and practices, aquatic adjustment and swimming readiness skills, fun and enjoyment in the water, participant socialization, and parental involvement.
Pre-School Program Children ages 2 - 3 1/2 years. The purpose of this program is to further develop the water babies skills and learn the folowing: enter & exit the pool in a safe manner, feel comfortable in the water, submerge in a rhythmic pattern, explore buoyancy in a front and back position, perform combined stroke on front and/or back, change position in water and learn about choosing and using a life jacket.

SWIM LEVELS

Level 1 (tadpole)
Introduction to Water Skills: helps students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.
             -enter water unassisted
             -bob five times to chin level

Level 2 (frog)
Fundamental Aquatic Skills: gives students success with fundamental skills.
                -front glide
                -float on back with support

Level 3 (sea turtle)
Stroke Development: builds on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice.
            -jump into deep water from the side
            -front crawl

Level 4 (otter)
Stroke Improvement: develops confidence in the strokes learned and to improve other aquatic skills.
                -swim underwater (3 body lengths)
                -demonstrate a dive from a compact and stride position

Level 5 (seal)
Stroke Refinement: provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.
                -demonstrate a survival float
                -demonstrate flip turns

Level 6 (dolphin)
Swimming and Skill Proficiency: refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with "menu" options. Each of these options focus on preparing students to participate in more advance courses, such as Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training.
