What We Do
· Honors Freshman Orientation Retreat (H4)- H4 is a four day retreat where Honors freshman can connect with other incoming freshman and HonorsToppers at Camp Loucon. Activities include Ultimate Frisbee, swimming, low- and high-rope courses, kickball, volleyball, and capture the flag! The activities are team building exercises so the freshmen have a stronger sense of community and trust upon entering college.
· BBQ with the Profs- This event is held within the first two weeks of each fall semester. It gives freshmen Honors students the opportunity to meet each other and a member of WKU’s faculty. HonorsToppers lead the students to a faculty member’s home for a meal and social activities.
· Picnic with the President- President Ransdell hosts freshmen Honors students at his home during this event. Students are led by HonorsToppers to the president’s home, where they “picnic” on his front lawn, play corn hole, and win door prizes.
· Academic Transitions Programs- ATP is a program required for all freshman and transfer students planning to register for classes. It helps students become more familiar with WKU and to meet, in a group setting, with an academic advisor from their chosen major. Students also register for classes and leave with a copy of their class schedule.
· Writing letters to prospective students- HonorsToppers like to meet and communicate with prospective students and offer help as they transition to a new environment.
· Writing BioBlurbs- During the summer before their first semester, freshmen fill out a questionnaire about themselves. HonorsToppers take this information and form a BioBlurb, which is then placed online. The BioBlurbs, along with a picture of the student, is viewable by all incoming Honors freshmen on the Honors website.
· Campus tours for special Honors guests- HonorsToppers meet with prospective students and other guests to introduce them to WKU and the University Honors College. HonorsToppers lead tours and have lunch with guests in order to answer any questions and ensure a pleasant visit for the guest.
· Honors Graduation Banquet
· Scholars' luncheons and dinners
· Information booths and student panels- HonorsToppers hold information booths about the Honors College, upcoming events, study abroad, and other opportunities. They also sit in at student panels for issues such as study abroad or college life. These booths and panels take place at Focus on Western, at Academic Transitions Programs, in the residence halls, and at other campus-wide events.
