YARMOUK FM

HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

January 22 – February 6, 2007

WKU is hosting two staff members from Yarmouk FM for technical and marketing/sales training. The two participants are Mansour Al Twal (Technical Manager) and Adma Abu Al Shar (Marketing/Sales Manager). Above, Mansour speaks wtih Jeanine Cherry of WKU's School of Journalism & Broadcasting.

The challenge of managing the technical operations of Yarmouk FM increases as students produce advanced programs. Maintaining easy-to-use systems is essential and requires the technical staff be exposed to various radio station operations in order to develop the procedures for Yarmouk FM. The goal of the technical training is to provide a wide array of experience to generate new ideas on how to manage the technical operations that will provide the students a solid foundation in radio station content creation and management. The focus will be on the technical and operational management of radio stations in the US including two radio stations at WKU and several commercial radio stations in the area.

The marketing/sales training run parallel. Yarmouk FM is new for everyone, not the least of which is the audience. People will listen only if they find the service valuable. It will take time to build listenership that will lead to financial support in the form of advertising. This will require skills in marketing and building public awareness. To attract advertisers, Yarmouk FM must provide data to show that people are listening. The goal is to provide peer-to-peer training in radio marketing. The Advertising & Marketing training will focus on radio station marketing and public awareness as well as techniques to build advertising for the radio station.
