Complete Books Online
Que's Digital Bookshelf
Que is the first publisher to offer an extensive library of online books on the hottest new computer software and technologies. Here you can access information quickly and easily on topics such as Web Publishing, Internet Programming, Operating Systems, Programming, Networking, and more.

Online Booksellers

If you're a "bookaholic," and haven't yet discovered the wonderful world of online booksellers, we apologize to your pocketbook in advance. Without doubt, the two best online booksellers are amazon.com and Wordsworth Books. Both of these booksellers offer excellent editorials, reviews, commentary, and visits with authors. Book descriptions are generally better than the publisher's. Each boasts an inventory of 2.5 million titles including out-of-print and hard-to-find titles. Both offer services to help you locate books you're looking for. Shopping is easy and safe with their secure servers and your credit card and both indicate estimated shipping time accurately. In addition, you'll save from 20% to 50% on most current titles!

If you want excellent selection, savings and delivery to your door (usually within two to three days), visit:

Amazon.com - The Earth's Biggest Bookstore
For webweaving books, check the Computer and Internet Books section.
Wordsworth Books
Most publishers now have a Web presence. If you'd like to check a particular publisher, Northern Lights Internet Solutions Ltd. offers, the Publisher's Catalog Homepage. Indexed by country, the list contains links to virtually every publisher in the world.

Books We Recommend

The books listed here are those we use ourselves and feel confident recommending. We only recommend books we feel are worth the investment. In the technology field, many books are out-of-date by the time they hit the shelves so we prefer books that have a future as reference works or guides covering both introductory and advanced topics. We don't generally recommend the "Whatever for Dummies or Idiots" books because their usefulness is limited to the raw beginner. Once you've passed that stage, you're looking for another book!

There's really no online experience equivalent to thumbing through the pages of a book you're considering for purchase. We've tried to give you as much "decision support" as possible, though, by providing several links for each book. A link on the author's name will take you to the author's personal or professional page; a link on the title of the book will take you to the book's companion web site; and the "amazon.com link" will take you to the book's listing at amazon.com where you can find reviews, comments, and other helpful information.

Another source to check for information about current books is The Web Publishing Resource Guide  created and maintained by Teri Akpodiete.  Up-to-date listings and reviews of books related to Web publishing can be found in the Web Publishing/Development Books section.

Electronic publicatons (eZines) we find useful

E-Zines are publications available only in electronic form. They are usually very focused and publish on a regular or dymanic schedule. In addition to up-to-the-minute information about Web design topics by experts, many eZines are a wonderful way to explore great Web design in practice.

High Five
Interviews, articles, news, and reviews of the best sites on the Web. "Through our content, we promote fine design and high style on the Web."

NetscapeWorld
"IDGs Magazine for the Web professional." Current, advanced topics such as HTML, Java, CGI.

JavaWorld
"IDGs Magazine for the Java Community."

CNET Features - How To
Although technically not an eZine, this site offers articles that target many HTML and design-related issues. You'll have to look through the Table of Contents for the articles you're interested in, but it's worth the trouble.

adobe.mag
Published by Adobe Systems Incorporated for users of its software products and others involved with digital/online publishing and digital media. It's no surprise that you'll need Adobe Acrobat to view much of this publication.

Web Design & Review
"tips, tricks, news, technique, reviews and how-to make your publications the best they can be... A must for anyone who uses a computer for materials you want people to see!"

creative good web help
"Free, unsponsored, non-hyped, easy-to-understand Web help. For the sole purpose of making the Internet more usable. It's geared toward non-tech-gurus (i.e. most of the users out there). All in plain English."

WebDeveloper's Journal
"News, product reviews, how-to-do-it articles, editorial comment, and more. Topics include web development, HTML, Java, Shockwave, Web publishing packages, CGI, scripting languages, RealAudio and other Web audio tools, desktop publishing and graphics tools."

Computer-Mediated Communication Magazine
"CMC Magazine reports on people, events, applications, and research related to computer-mediated communication (CMC). It draws on an interdisciplinary mix of perspectives from communication, technology, journalism, and other disciplines. CMC Magazine publishes news, features, essays, and reports about the phenomenon of human communication, interaction, and information retrieval on global networks."

InterFace Magazine
"The premise of this publication is to help bridge the invisible gap between the user on that side of the screen and the computer/tool on this side. To create a common boundary between two portions of matter or space. To explore the human-machine InterFace."

If you'd like to investigate more e-Zines, the best resource is John Labovitz's e-zine-list "This is a directory of electronic 'zines around the world, accessible via the Web, Gopher, FTP, email, and other services. The list is updated approximately monthly." As of June, 1997, the list contained 1,867 zines.

Online Versions of Print Publications

Many of today's computer related magazines have WWW sites that often contain both their hardcopy and electronic articles. Both current issues and archives of previous issues are usually available.

New Media Magazine
"The magazine for the creators or the digital future." A magazine devoted to design professionals. Articles include design issues as well as tools.

WebMaster Online
Business oriented, but contains a great deal of practical information for webmasters.

A quick way to find the online home of your favorite computer magazine is the Microsoft Library - Computer Magazines section You can view the entire list or search for a particular title.
