University
Police Academy
During
the Spring Semester of each academic year, WKUPD conducts the University
Police Academy for the students, faculty, staff, and citizens of the
Western Kentucky University community. The Academy is a free program
which is designed to foster effective interaction between the law enforcement
and the community they serve.
The
Academy is both a learning experience for the community and the department.
During the Academy, specific topics in law enforcement are discussed
and demonstrated in a learning environment. Patrol Procedures, DUI contacts,
traffic
stops, use of force issues, crime prevention methods, and investigative
methods
are discussed and illustrated through hands-on instruction and audio/visual
materials.
Other
events include a departmental tour and a tour of the Warren County Regional
Jail. Participants are also offered an opportunity to become involved
in a "ride-along" with patrol officers assigned to vehicle
units. This opportunity provides the citizen with a "windshield
view" of the daily tasks of the police officer on patrol. Citizens
are not trained to become law enforcement officers during this instruction,
but during the Academy it is hoped that Academy participants become
aware of the role of the police officer in their community.
