In an effort to encourage external funding at Western Kentucky University, the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) has made available a limited amount of funding to support travel by WKU faculty and staff members writing proposals to fund research, training, or service projects. This program provides travel support for faculty (A) to meet with program officers at the funding agency, (B) to attend a proposal preparation workshop, a funding information conference, or a bidders conference sponsored by the funding agency, or (C) to attend a proposal preparation workshop, a funding information conference, or a bidders conference that is scheduled as part of a professional meeting. This program is intended to provide the opportunity for faculty and staff to communicate with program officers about funding activities in preparation for submitting a proposal for external funding.
Full-time faculty or staff are eligible to apply for awards from OSP funds under this program. The outcome of this investment will be a grant proposal submitted to an external sponsor at the next reasonable deadline.
It is anticipated that these travel awards will be used to supplement more primary sources of funding from departmental, school/college, or other sources. Therefore, awards will provide no more than 33% support for activities. Evidence of support from other sources is an important factor in the decision for funding. Requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and support may vary depending on availability of funds, relevance to the above program requirements, and level of support from other sources. No more than one funded trip per fiscal year, per applicant, may be approved.
Complete the request form for the Proposal Development Travel Fund (and attach an abstract or pre-proposal) so that all parties involved in support of travel requests may have information about the request and a record of funding commitments. Prior to forwarding the request form to the Office of Sponsored Programs, the applicant should receive approval for travel funding support from his/her Department Head and Dean. Incomplete requests will be returned.
Requests may be submitted at any time; however, to be considered eligible for support, materials should be received well in advance of the planned travel dates. University guidelines regarding travel must be followed. All travel arrangements and processing of university paperwork are the responsibility of the applicant.
