Entrance Interviews for Perkins Loan

How do I apply for a Federal Perkins Loan?

The application process for a Federal Perkins Loan begins by completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), available in the Student Financial Assistance Office. The Student Financial Assistance Office determines who is eligible for a Federal Perkins Loan and awards the loan.

What are the steps necessary for me to take to accept and receive a Federal Perkins Loan?

Once the student is notified by the Student Financial Assistance Office that they have been awarded a Federal Perkins Loan they will also receive notification from our office as to what needs to be done next.

However you may contact our office before you receive your notification and we will let you know what your next step will be.

NOTE: You cannot accept the loan via TopNet.  Our office accepts the loan for you.

Why do I need to attend an entrance interview?

It is Federal Regulations that every student must attend an entrance interview the first time that they borrow a Federal Perkins Loan and sign the Master Promissory Note.  The entrance interview will last approximately 20-30 minutes and will cover all information about the loan (interest rate, grace period for repayment, procedures taken when a loan goes into default, etc), deferment and cancellation provisions that come with the loan, and sign all the necessary paperwork to accept the loan and have the loan disbursed to the student’s account.

After the initial signing of the Master Promissory Note, any funds borrowed in future semesters we only require the signing of a disclosure statement that will be mailed to the student.  The student needs to sign and return the disclosure statement as soon as it is received so it will not delay the disbursement of the loan to the student’s account.

However if you exit WKU and then return at a later time you may have to sign a new Master Promissory Note if you borrow any additional funds.  Our office will notify you if this is the case.

NOTE: Please arrive on time for your pre-scheduled interview.

How do I pre-schedule my entrance interview?

During the summer the student will receive a letter congratulating him/her on being awarded a Perkins Loan with a schedule of available entrance interview dates and times attached.  Please contact our office directly at 270-745-5551 or via email at perkins.loan@wku.edu to confirm your entrance interview time and date preference.  The student must call as soon as possible because the interview time slots fill up very quickly.

NOTE: If the student has not been contacted by this office by mid August then they need to call immediately at 270-745-5551 to inquire about the loan.

What should I bring to my entrance interview?

In preparation for the interview bring the following items with you to the interview:

  • picture identification
  • ink pen
  • complete addresses (including house members and street names), phone numbers and information of employment for father, mother, brothers and/or sisters
  • complete addresses (including house numbers and street names) and phone numbers for four additional references including one additional relative (DO NOT duplicate information for immediate family references)

NOTE: The entrance interview is NOT complete and will not be processed until all paper work is signed and all information is complete.
