"Just Say No" to Halogen Floor Lamps

Western Kentucky University discourages the use of halogen floor lamps. These lamps draw 200-300 watts of electrical power, many times more than conventional incandescent or overhead flourescent lighting. due to the high temperature of the halogen bulb, halogen fixtures pose a fire risk. They are illegal in all campus buildings. For those who find floor lamps with up-lighting preferable to overhead flourescent light, we recommend the use of Torchiere style lamps with dimmable flourescent lamps.

All table and floor lighting fixtures should have compact flourescent lamps, not wasteful incandescents. When using table or floor lamps, help conserve energy and turn off overhead lighting if not needed.
