Services & Guidelines

Office Paper
Small grey desk-side recycling bins are located in offices and some classrooms and are designated for paper.  These bins are emptied regularly by Building Service Attendants (BSAs) who take the paper to a larger collection bin at each building.

Recycling containers are located in each campus computer lab for paper collection.  BSAs take this paper to the larger building containers.

Presently, office/copy paper should be separated from newspaper, glossy and colored paper.  Please do not put anything other than the materials described above into these bins.  It is not necessary to remove staples, but it is helpful to do so whenever possible.

The following should not be placed into your paper collection bin:  paper clips and other metal fasteners, plastic sleeves, baggies, or dividers.  If materials other than paper are put into this bin, it is considered contaminated and the entire contents must be thrown away.

Office paper placed into the large collection bin for pick up by the Recycling crew must be bagged.  Loose paper cannot be transported as it will fly out of the back of the truck.

Mixed Paper
Newspaper, brochures, glossy paper, and paper other than office paper should be separated from office paper.  Office paper is currently of greater value as a recyclable material, so if we separate these recyclables, we receive more for them.  Please bag mixed paper as you do office paper, so it does not fly out during transport.  Bagged mixed paper should be placed in the large collection bins outside of each building, along with your office paper.
All cardboard must be broken down (flattened).  Cardboard must be placed in the large collection bins provided for each building or stacked near these collection bins for pick up by the Recycling Crew.  Please help your BSAs by breaking down your boxes and carrying them to your building's recycling area.
Currently WKU Recycling has no aluminum collection bins in administration or classroom buildings.  This is because all vending machines on campus now dispense plastic beverage bottles.  However, aluminum is being recycled by Housing and Residence Life (HRL) in dorms and residence halls.  Aluminum collection bins are located in all of the campus housing buildings.

There is also a large aluminum collection bin conveniently located behind the Service and Supply building (corner of Russellville Road and University Boulevard).  This bin is provided by the "Drive to a Million" campaign which returns funds generated by aluminum recycling to participating schools.  WKU is a participating school and funds received from aluminum placed into this bin are used to improve the campus recycling program.  Help improve our recycling program by bringing your aluminum cans to this bin!

WKU does not presently recycle plastic in academic and administration buildings.  Housing and Residence Life will begin recycling plastic this year, with collection bins for plastic in each dorm and residence hall lobby.  A campus community drop-off collection center for plastic and glass is coming soon.
WKU does not presently recycle glass, but a campus community drop-off collection center for plastic and glass is coming soon.
WKU Recycling and GreenToppers have partnered to provide recycling for special events on campus.  If you are planning a special event and would like recycling services, please submit a Recycling Request Form to WKU Recycling at least 2 weeks before your event date.  WKU Recycling and GreenToppers will do our best to provide recycling service for your event.
