WKU Recycling is a service of the Division of Facilities Management. The WKU Recycling Crew consists of two part-time student employees and a part-time Recycling Coordinator. We have one small truck.
The Recycling Crew runs an 18 mile route around Main Campus, South Campus, and the WKU Farm, which includes pick-up at 50 sites. Each time we make the circuit we pick up only one type of recyclable, as materials must be received and weighed separately at the recycling center. This is why you may notice that we have picked up your paper but left your cardboard. Be assured that we will be back for you cardboard when the paper route has been completed. Please be patient - one circuit may take the entire day, depending on volume of materials. Often just two or three stops may fill the truck. In 2006, we made 490 trips to the recycling center.
In 2006 the WKU Recycling Crew collected 43,800 pounds of cardboard and 41,810 pounds of mixed paper. Currently, the value of our recyclables is not enough to fund the recycling program, so we work with very limited resources. We are working on ways to improve our program to make it more efficient, successful, and sustainable. Look for improvements in the coming year!
