What is it?

As part of an on-going effort to help schools meet the needs of high ability students, The Center for Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University is pleased to offer the Advanced Placement Summer Institute for the 24th summer. The Western Kentucky University AP Summer Institute has been endorsed by the College Board. Institute consultants are experienced Advanced Placement teachers who have demonstrated their ability to help other teachers prepare to teach Advanced Placement classes. Many are Table Readers, Table Leaders, test writers, and even text authors. The AP Summer Institute will be held on the campus of Western Kentucky University which is located in south central Kentucky, approximately 110 miles south of Louisville, Kentucky, and 70 miles north of Nashville, Tennessee.

The job of teaching the high ability student at times proves ominous indeed. Teachers actively search out resources that help in understanding, technique, and method. Larry Treadwell, AP European History teacher at Ely High School, Pompano Beach, Florida, serves as example. In the early eighties he began preparing to teach the course in a high school which had never offered it before. His source of help proved to be the WKU AP Summer Institute. He comments, "The consultant provided me with ideas, concepts and strategies which enabled me to be successful in my first year as an AP teacher." Mr. Treadwell was one of the over 3500 teachers who have been strengthened through the institute. But his story differs somewhat. He is the only participant who has ever returned as a consultant.

The institute does make a difference for those professionals seeking guidance in beginning these courses and in strengthening them. "For those participants who have the desire to excel, the WKU AP Institute will change the way they think about teaching and education and will instill a pursuit of excellence that will carry them through their careers," Mr. Treadwell explains. "For those of us who teach the workshop, this is a battery recharge, a chance to share the exuberance of youth, to exchange ideas and then be fully recharged to face the upcoming year." And as former participant and current WKU consultant, he should know.

Danny Lawrence
College Board Consultant
Winston-Salem, NC
"I still remember how valuable my weeklong AP summer institute was in helping me to get started that first year I taught AP English-from planning my course to understanding the nuts and bolts of the exam. Even though I'm supposed to be the expert, I love conducting these summer institutes, because every year I take back some new lesson or unit plan from the participants. The week is filled with sharing ideas and discussing literature and the teaching of literature."

I taught English for 30 years now in North Carolina and for 16 years AP English at the Career Center. I usually taught three or four AP classes of about thirty students each and served as the department chair. I've taught every grade level and English class from seventh grade to sophomore-college English in those 30 years, and I still find the AP curriculum the most challenging and rewarding. I have been a reader of the AP English exams for eleven years, a table leader three years, and an AP English consultant for ten. I am a National Board Certified Teacher in Adolescent/Young Adult English/Language Arts. I have both an undergraduate degree and a master's degree in English."
