How to Adapt a Semester Course for a Summer Session

1. Tell them up-front about your expectations to destroy the myth of the "easy" summer session. Clarify requirements as early as possible in the session.
2. Make introductions using non-routine infonnation. On the first day of class ask students to tell something interesting about themselves, in order to help remember their names.
3. Use a seating chart to remember names.
4. Ask students to jot down questions on index cards about matenal they don't understand. They should hand the cards in later.
5. Use group activines to break up the class time.
6. Encourage students to study together during the summer.
7. If a class is structured so that there is extra time after an exam, suggest that students use this time for work on group projects.
