Introduction:

Bowling Green and Western Kentucky University are located between two large military installations, Fort Campbell and Fort Knox. This area of the country also produces a large number of active duty and Kentucky Army National Guard soldiers. A result of this has been that a good number of veterans are returning to the area and attending WKU.

This group of veteran students can be broken down into two subgroups, based on age and time served in the military, which have different issues, goals, resources, and responsibilities. In this seminar we will examine the differences between these two groups and the “typical” WKU student, as well as strategies for improving the classroom experience for both groups of returning vets.

I am a career Army Officer, who is Department Head for the Military Science and Leadership department at Western. My interest in conducting this seminar is to assist you in helping former soldiers to graduate and have a better educational experience. I spoke with Mr. Randy Wilson, Director of the Veterans Upward Bound program at Western, Army Community Service, and the Veterans Administration (VA) to get the best information possible.
