Discussion Questions:
-Should all incoming freshman have the opportunity to take at least 2 linked classes to create a better interpersonal bonding experience?

As a learning community faculty participant in Fall 2002, I (Pfohl) would like to share some thoughts, insights and experiences regarding this process. I was involved with 2 learning communities as as UC 101/psych majors instructor. One UC101 class was linked with Psy 100 and Eng 100; the other was linked with Psy 100 and Public Speaking.

I must admit, being based in the psychology department, that I did a lot more collaboration with hats 100 teacher than the others. Part of this was logistical - I saw that instructor frequently and both of my classes had Psy 100. However, the flexibility of UC 101 allowed me to actually work with all areas . A lot of this involved scheduling of topics. For example, before the students were having their first major tests, I made sure that I covered study skills and test taking skills. Before they had to give their first speech, we covered stress management. Before a big psych test they were really worried about, I was able (being a psych instructor myself) to help them review some concepts they were confused about.

We always started each class with a discussion of what was going on with their other classes. The students were grateful for an opportunity to share both good and bad experiences, and this also was a forum for learning appropriate as well as inappropriate ways to deal with issues relating to the classroom and to faculty. This worked so well because all the other class members were in those classes.
