Teaching Study Skills to Students

Learning Objective(s):

Participants in this online workshop will be able to:

  1. Describe basic principles of strong study skills
  2. Discuss advantages of developing good study habits for instructors and students
  3. Explain what instructors can do to encourage better study habits in students
  4. Describe how general study skills can be adapted to fit the unique needs of your discipline
  5. List three techniques you can use in the classroom to encourage students to practice good study habits.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What have you observed about the study habits of students in your classes? Have you seen differences among groups or changing trends over time?
  2. In what particular ways will helping your students develop better study habits benefit you and your classes?
  3. What successful techniques can instructors use to encourage students to consistently practice better study habits?
  4. Have you experienced any problems with teaching study skills in the classroom, or do you foresee any problems?
  5. What challenges have you encountered when encouraging students to practice good study skills? How have you overcome them?
  6. What do you view as the biggest issue faculty face regarding students and study skills?
  7. Is there anything else you would like to know?
