Learning Objectives:

What are the learning objectives for this teaching activity or issue? What will the impact on student learning be?

Assessment is a primary motivational tool to drive student performance. Structured well students experience it as an opportunity to demonstrate what they know and to consolidate their skills.

Unfortunately, assessment experiences can be sources of great anxiety for students, regardless of their actual performance. Ideally one keeps anxiety low so that it doesn’t interfere with the purpose of testing, assessing what a student knows or understands. Because online assessment introduces variables such as technology and Internet connection reliability, more difficult access to teacher help for papers, as well as less teacher control over the testing environment, it can become stressful for all parties.

Discussion Question:
What is most frustrating for you about doing assessment in your online class?
