Learning Objectives:

This program serves to give a basic introduction to some of the medical issues faculty members may encounter. Each sub-section addresses basic facts and challenges, signs and symptoms and some interventions that may be appropriate.

Objectives for the workshop are for participants to be able to:

  • understand signs and symptoms for common medical conditions
  • be able to differentiate between conditions which have similar symptoms,such as the ‘flu and a cold
  • explain advantages and disadvantages of early intervention
  • understand the faculty role in prevention and early treatment
  • identify referral sources
  • know who to call and how to handle emergencies in the classroom

Influenza

  • Faculty should understand the common symptoms of the ‘flu and be able to differentiate between the ‘flu and a cold.
  • Faculty should encourage early treatment, so the course of the illness can be shortened and the student can return to classes sooner.
  • Faculty may also want to encourage students sick with ‘flu to seek early treatment and stay home, to prevent spread to other students.

Mood disorders/Substance abuse

  • Faculty should be aware of the characteristics of these conditions, and if identified know where the student can be referred for help.
  • Faculty should also know whom to contact in a crisis situation.

Diabetes

  • Faculty should be familiar with the fact that diabetes is affecting the life of many students.
  • Faculty should be aware of the signs of a diabetic crisis and know how to respond in a crisis.

Seizures

  • Faculty should be aware of how to protect a person who is having a seizure.
  • Faculty should be aware that a patient having a seizure will need to be evaluated at the hospital.
