Who Are Gifted College Students?:

Definition of a Gifted College Student
Gifted college students are typically defined as those students who are either members of, or qualify for membership in, a university honors program. Membership is usually dependent upon some combination of a minimum SAT/ACT score, high school grade point average and/or class rank, letters of recommendation, and a statement of interest. For incoming freshman, membership in the WKU Honors Program requires: a minimum 25 ACT composite score and 3.5 unweighted GPA; OR a minimum 28 ACT composite score and 3.2 GPA; OR a minimum 23 ACT composite score and 3.8 GPA.

How do you know if a gifted student is in your class?
You may be able to recognize a gifted student from his or her high exam scores, extremely well-written research papers, quick grasp of material, higher-order questions and comments in class, ability to make cross-topic and/or cross-discipline connections, and so on. Or, a gifted student may not demonstrate any of these abilities and instead express boredom, skip class, fail to turn in assignments (usually because the assignment is not challenging, and therefore boring), and so on (Robinson, 1997).
