PC Screensavers for download

Consider creating screensavers for your students to prompt them on key issues or remind them of significant principles each time they look at their monitor. Search a respected website, such as download.cnet.com (they check for viruses), for "screensaver creator" software and check the reviews to find one with the features you want. Another option is flash card software, but often the learning value of flashcards is in the initial creation of the card. It may be better to have students create those learning objects.

Remember, if you have students with Apple computers, you need to provide a compatible experience for them. Perhaps a handout with the information would be appropriate.

And instruction for installation are:

1. Click on the file name above and you'll be prompted to save a file on a disk or your c drive. (Remember where you put it!)
2. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer, find the file and double-click on the file name.
3. It will provide you with instructions for installation.
There is one step which is trying to sell you the software. (It starts "to make your own screensaver....") You can bypass that with no harm to the installation.

Instructions for uninstallation are:

• Goto start menu>control panel and in control panel click the Add/Remove Programs, then you will see CTL-XXX, now select this and click Remove Tab, that's how you uninstall this screensaver.

When making your own screensaver, decide if you want all text or images and text.
If all text, prepare it in advance. Keep it short and to the point. The typical screensaver software allows a number of effects with text.

If images and text, prepare your images at 72 dpi. (The smaller the images, the more you can use and still have a reasonable size for the screensaver. We used about 6 or 7 images. Alternatively, you can post the file to your webpage and have them download it from there.) Your images need to be ones you own the copyright for or are public domain images.

While the actions of creating the screensaver are simple and fast, expect that the creative part of deciding on layout, font, etc. to consume, as much time as you are willing to devote to it. It would be easy to spend an hour or more without realizing it.

Once the file is created, you can then make copies in your department or provide it on a webpage as we have done. Installation is relatively straightforward, download and click on the file.
