Retention Techniques :

According to Terrell (1990), adult students are no longer the exception or minority, but the majority on many campuses. Institutions that adapt services originally designed for traditional age students will benefit from increased recruitment and retention of adult students. What results will be a system that not only addresses adult student needs, but also provides more effective and efficient delivery of services (p. 246).

Returning to school is a fearful process for most nontraditional students, however, nontraditional students can overcome these fears (Meier, 1993). Faculty and student services can assist nontraditional students in the transition to college. The integration of nontraditional students requires that adult students be empowered and that there are services on campus that advocate for them (Kasworm, 1993).
